Description:
Join a community of art teachers interested in bringing clay into the classroom. Featuring renowned artists, demonstrations and hands-on studio experiences, teachers will explore the art of clay and learn how to incorporate ceramics into their art curricula and explore its ability to foster creative and critical thought.
The institute will focus on developing thematic lessons and fostering aesthetic awareness of ceramic art. Some of the general curriculum themes that will be explored will be:
Clay in the Figure/Portrait
Clay in the Vessel
Clay in the Architecture/Tiles
Clay in Political Activism and Social Justice
Teachers will also learn technical skills involved in operating ceramic equipment including kiln firing and glazing. Each enrollee will receive a curriculum guide with lesson plans and technical information on setting up a clay studio in their school. All materials will be included.
This week-long program will prepare and inspire any teacher to bring clay into the classroom in a rich and in-depth way. This summer institute is also a precursor to the county-wide “All Fired Up!” event, a group of over 50 clay arts exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and symposia throughout Westchester County taking place in October and November 2008. Discussion will include how to integrate this upcoming event into the classroom and how this rare and much-anticipated opportunity can spark a passion for clay at your school.
Cost: approximately $388.75 (NY State resident tuition + fees).
Enrollees will be able to earn 2 undergraduate college credits through Westchester Art Workshop/SUNY Westchester Community College (the course will also be available on a non-credit basis for the same fee).
Institute Goals:
• To excite and encourage art teachers to use clay as both an artistic medium and as a vehicle for exploring the social and physical environment
• To empower teachers with knowledge, techniques and methods for teaching ceramics
• To demystify firing and technical aspects of ceramics.
• To support student thinking and learning in ceramics and curricular areas, while developing self-esteem and encouraging collaboration
• To create and support an ongoing continuum of ceramics education in Westchester
